What system model and specs do you have?

First try this and then this to solve this issue.  If it does not work, post back, we will try and help.

Apologies if this seems too obvious a point, but ensure you're not giving the touchpad multiple sources of input.  By this, I mean: use one finger, not two (or three or four), avoid brushing up against the pad when navigating with it.

I have the same problem with my Inspiron 8100. If I place any pressure around (not actually on) the touchpad's palmrest area it will move on its own with various degrees of intensity. Sometimes it gets stuck in a corner for a while and sometimes it slowly creeps in a particular direction. It will often change directions or speed if I apply pressure again but the slightest pressure can set it off (typing, moving the computer, etc.). At no point do I touch the trackpad to get this to happen, though.

With tech support, we went through a full barrage of tests and it failed all of them (update/reinstall driver, safe mode, and even running from a live Linux CD). They replaced the palm rest (and I assume the trackpad goes with that but I don't know) and the problem is still there. Any help would be most appreciated.

I found a solution in this thread ( http://forums.us.dell.com/supportforums/board/message?board.id=insp_input&message.id=24261). Long story short, disable the point stick with the latest Synaptics driver.

Thanks for the feedback.  The only thing that seems to have worked (so far, that is) is to go into mouse properties and set all options back to their original default settings.  And your'e right, it DID seem to act up when I moved the laptop.  Strange. But so far, so good.

uh, no, I don't use more than one finger on the touchpad.  I can just sit back and watch the pointer do it's thing.....it's not me

Despite my initial enthusiasm, I only created a more annoying problem. Now, occassionally, the mouse will stop working altogether. I hate trackpads and point sticks so you'd think I would just abandon hope of enjoying what Dell so graciously provided to make our lives easier, a pretty purple nub to stare at and a flat place to put my beverages.
