Studio 1555 / No restore partition???

I just received my studio 1555 yesterday. When I ordered it, it was ordered as a vista business machine with an xp downgrade. It came out of the box with XP running. It's acting weird now, and I want to restore it to the exact way it was when I took it out of the box. But when I try the ctrl+f11 at the startup, nothing happens. Chatted with tech support, they connected to my machine and downloaded a BOOT_DSR.exe file to try and initiate it from within windows. That failed with an error "the Dell System Restore Functionality Is Unavailable." Now I KNOW there has to be a restore partition on this machine because it's only reporting a drive size of 465GB (on a 500GB drive). But I can't see it anywhere. Not in administrative tools under computer management, and not using acronis truimage (i wanted to create an image of the drive from the factory too).

Tech support basically said it doesn't work, restore from discs. That's unacceptable to me. They also said they've never seen a machine get delivered with the xp downgrade installed, they usually send it with vista installed and give the user the XP disc to do the downgrade themself. I'm getting VERY frustrated and i've only had this machine a day!!!!! I just want it back to factory state so I can take an image of it at that point and know I have an emergency backup.

Can anyone PLEASE help me out here??????

Apparently it has no restore partition.  If it did, it would show up in DIsk Management.   As for the drive size....

Windows uses drive space in binary, but the total number of bits in the drive is specified in decimal.   So, for every 1kb Windows reports, it actually uses 1024bits.   Multiply that out (1024x1024x1024), and for each 1GB reported by Windows, it's actually using 1.073741824 GB.    465 x 1.0737 = 499.3 GB, which is basically a rounding error (plus there's probably a diagnostic partition on there, and some miscellaneous unused space).

It's entirely possible Dell no longer bothers to install restore partitions with the XP downgrade ,  so you may not have any other choice but to reinstall XP from scratch.

Matter of perspective, I guess.   Being able to get XP at all is a pretty good deal considering MS has been trying to kill it for years - though they were smart enough to let the OEMs like Dell continue to offer the downgrades long after they were supposed to expire.

Actually, I think you qualify for the Win7 free upgrade, too.
