The dreaded AMBER LIGHT
Hi,
I have an Inspirion 9100, with one battery, both of which I have had for under a year.
Only yesterday morning I started to see my battery light blinking irregularly. Basically there are 5 quick flashes in succession: 4 amber and 1 green, followed by a pause, and then the same 5 again etc.
Now the Power Meter shows 28% charge, and has done so for 12 hours. There are no signs of charging at all, even though the laptop is connected to the AC adaptor.
Upon turning off the AC adaptor, the laptop shuts off immediately; for some reason the battery's supposed 28% is not doing anything.
This is a problem which seems to be quite common for some Dell users - see http://west-wind.com/weblog/posts/365.aspx
I left the laptop switched off and unplugged from the mains (in case the battery overheated) to see if it could cool down. After, I had to plug into the mains to get it back on (I was confronted with a message saying no time/date was set) and the amber light still flashed!
I am at a loss as to what I should do. Please would a regular forum member or Dell forum regulator give me some advice.
Many thanks,
Edward

- I also had the same problem with the Inspiron 1100. The manual said that it was caused by the battery overheating. I left the laptop on unplugged to drain the battery. I then let the laptop cool down for atleast 24 hours. Then I plugged it back in to get a full charge before I turned it back on. Light disappeared. I get the light every now and then but I do the above and it takes care of it for awhile.NickiConsultant with The Pampered Chef

If the other problem persists, the notebook needs service - call Dell. Hopefully the warranty hasn't expired (the main battery is warranted for one year no matter how long the system warranty is).
