yes icons get smaller along with text usually.  you may have more real estate available on your monitor.  every thing will look less pixelated.

don't worry you should only run your 1901fp at 1280 x 1024 with a refresh rate of 60Mhz (not that it matters with a lcd)

For the best performance and display quality of this monitor, your display resolution should be set to 1280 x 1024 which is the native resolution of the monitor. You can adjust other display settings to compensate for the smaller icons and text:

Go to display properties/settings/advanced and you can change the DPI setting.

Under display properties/appearance/font size select large fonts.

Under display properties/appearance/effects clear the 1st box, check the 2nd box and select ClearType.

what will changing to a higher resolution do to other stuff like games and digital video and pictures?  will it make everything look smaller or what?  what kind of effect will it have?

It will make them look the way they're supposed to look. Using less than the native resolution on an LCD monitor will result in an inferior appearance.
