HP VTL configuration problem
Hi,all
I have a question with configuration of HP VTL(Version 2.3),there is a problem with that:
when I want to find the unconfigured devices of the HP VTL mapping LUN,I found that there is a tape library and a tape drivers only.But I had create 60 virtual tape drivers in the HP VTL9000.And NetWorker find thedevices:

eight tape drivers
that means is that the tape library's autochanger can only manage one tape driver,and this tape drivers is shared,and this shared tape driver contain eight virtual tape drivers.
So the networker can not use the created by HP VTL virtual tape drivers.
What's wrong with this?There is the HP VTL's configuration problem:LUN mapping or masking?

I'm not sure of the problem yet but there is not a limitation on the number of drives. You may however give some thought to the amount of drives you are using. Virtual drives may be free but employing a huge quantity of them is not necessarily efficient - in particular it can play havoc with your tape handling requiring a large number of virtual tapes to be on the go at all times meaning your VTL capacity is less utilizable. You need to match the drives as to what your storage nodes can push and the VTL can receive, plus perhaps create some read only drives for restores/cloning.DavidHampson

Networker will happily trickle data to lots of virtual drives - you don't get issues like shoeshining - but if you are using, say 100 virtual drives you have potentially 100 tapes between being blank and being appendable which is likely to be a significant fraction of your overall virtual tapes - multiply this by your number of pools active in the VTL and a large number of tapes are required to be your tapes currently in use. Also it is likely to take several days to fill up tapes so they will take longer to expire than when the first data was put there. All this can have a significant impact on the effectively usable volume of storage on your VTL.DavidHampson

I know your means.
I want to say I create a virtual tape library and there are 8 virtual tape drivers in the virtual tape library.
But when I want to configure the virtual tape library,I could not configure the tape library correctly.
When I scan devices,networker can find device:HP@0.1.0,LTO Ultrium(1) and the eight tape drivers(/dev/nst0,/dev/nst1 and so on).So When I configured the devices,I find only one virtual tape can be used(/dev/nst0),the other virtual tape drivers are sharing in using(DDS),but I am not configure DDS.Just networker server use the library(VTL).

Are you using HP-UX? If so, you need to deal with 'volume set addressing'. Check your HP-UX documentation.
