Oracle restoration on the same host but different instance.

Hi all,

I am going to do a test restore of my Oracle database instance Prod_v1 to Prod_v2 on the same host (ORASVR) which is on a Windows 2003 Server with Oracle 10G. I have never done this before and therefore would like the gurus to help me verify if the procedure that i am going to do is correct:

1. Perform a schedule full backup of the production database (Prod_v1).
2. Create another instance (Prod_v2) with RMAN enabled.
3. Set the Oracel sid to Prod_V2 ( set ORACLE_SID=Prod_v2)
4. Connect to RMAN ( rman target sys/ora123@Prod_v2)
5. Shutdown database ( shutdown immediate;)
6. Execute the following RMAN commands:

run
{
allocate channel ch1 type 'SBT_TAPE';
send 'NSR_ENV=(NSR_SERVER="ntwkr-bksvr",NSR_CLIENT="orasvr")';
restore controlfile from autobackup;
release channel ch1;
}

run
{
allocate channel ch01 type 'SBT_TAPE';
send 'NSR_ENV=(NSR_SERVER="ntwkr-bksvr",NSR_CLIENT="orasvr")';
restore database;
recover database;
}

Will the above precedures work? BTW do i need to set the dbid?

Thanks in advance.

    That will restore original database I believe despite setting oracle sid (I could be wrong here)... I think what you should be after is duplication. There was a topic on this dew weeks ago - check it out.
