The other day I notice the my cable modem and my router was was working and my note book was off. So I came here to see what I can do to stop someone from use my web.And I found someone ask about wireless security in the forum and they said to active wep security and I did that.
But my question is will this stop someone from using my web provider or is there something else to active???? or will wep stop that?
Thank you for any help you can give :smileyvery-happy:
Enabling WEP encryption will stop the casual hacker from using your wireless network. Still there are other steps you need to take for better security. See my answers to a general security question in the following thread:
Just another small step. If the network cannot be seen, then it just makes it a little more difficult to break in. Again, nothing is 100% secure, but every step helps a bit.
this is true but anyone that can break WEP can find out your SSID ... that wouldn't be enough except that SSID disabled seems to hurt bandwidth on a lot of home networks as well
i really don't think that if you enable WEP that you can justify SSID disabled
Find the MAC address of your network card by going to Start > Run and typing cmd then clicking on OK. In the command prompt window that opens type ipconfig /all then hit the enter key. The MAC address of your network card will be listed as the "Physical Address". Write it down and make sure you have written it down correctly and make sure you write the down the address for the wireless network card, not for the ethernet card. Then get out your router manual and find out how to enable MAC address filtering. You will have to enter the MAC address of the network card into the table of allowable MAC addresses. If you ever in the future want to add another computer to your wireless network or a different computer, you will have to enter the MAC address for those network cards as well.
I did what you said and hidden my ssid. The day you reply. But today my computer was left on and I when to turn it off There was a warning from windows that someone is using my web and computer. Is there anything else that I need to do to stop this person or persons from doing this??? Also it said that if you turn off the computer this person will lose all on save data.
