If you are connecting your laptop directly to the cable modem, you can use either ethernet or USB cable.(in this procedure you will not be able to use the wireless feature of your laptop)

If you want to use the wireless feature of your laptop, you'll need to configure the wireless router into your network and that only supports ethernet connections.

I found the Netgear installation manual on their website and part of the instructions state "Locate the Ethernet cable that connects your computer to the modem". That is where I am confused because my computer is connected to my cable modem with a USB cable not an Ethernet cable. What do I do?? :smileysad:

One other question, is an Ethernet cable the same thing as a telephone line cable??

Ethernet cable is not the same as a telephone line cable. It has more wires in it and has a bigger jack on the end.  Most routers come with an ethernet cable, but if yours did not, then you will have to go to the store and buy one.
