Network Negotiation Delay?
Hey all. I added about 1/2 dozen Precision 450 boxes running XP Pro to my network last fall. Each one of them is having a problem finding the network in less than about 45 seconds.
My users get the logon prompt after about 5-10 seconds following a cold boot, but get the following when trying to logon to the network:
User Environment:
Windows cannot locate the server copy of your roaming profile and is attempting to log you on with your local profile. Changes to the profile will not be copied to the server when you log off. Possible causes of this error include network problems or insufficient security rights. If the problem persists, contact your network administrator.
Now, once they've logged on this first time, they obviously don't get any network drives, even though to them, Windows appears to launch normally. But, having them log off and back on corrects the problem. As mentioned, I eventually discovered that it was the TIME factor that made the connection work the second time.So I've been having these users wait a minute after booting before they logon, and this works. But it doesn't make you look too good in the eyes of your users if that's the best solution you have to this problem.
By the way, this has only occurred on cold boots. I'm running two Dell 3048 switches, and users on both switches have had this problem. Also, I have "Auto" turned on for speed and duplex. I tried changing to "Full Duplex" to see if it would make a difference, but it didn't.
Any ideas on this? I've never had this problem except with these machines. Other XP machines on the network don't have this problem.
Any ideas or suggestions would be wonderful.
With much gratitude,
Michael

Forgot to mention that the machines are using the Intel Prol 1000 onboard NIC. Thanks!
