No software for the ethernet controller
Just bought a used Inspiron 8600. There are 2 Network adapters identified in Device Manager, 1394 Net adapter(it's okay), Intel PRO/Wireless LAN 2100 3A Mini PCI Adapter(Device cannot start code. 10)...Can't troubleshoot because can't get to net without it!,
Under other devices there is Ethernet Controller(This device is not configured correctly code 1) Says to reinstall Driver. None of the CD's I have seem to have the Driver. And can't locate it on the hard drive.
Can't find it anywhere in the Dell download or fixes area.
I'm thinking the problem with the wireless adapter is the lack of software for the Ethernet Adapter. Needs that for Windows XP Pro to communicate with the wireless.
Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Thanks for the info. The Ethernet driver seems to have taken care of that problem. Device manager says the device is working properly.
The PRO/Wireless LAN 2100 3A Mini PCI Adatpter is still saying "This device cannot start. Code 10"
Local area connection says a network cable is unplugged!! This is wireless?
I'm running a Belkin wireless router w/3 cable wired PC's and 1 wireless laptop. Their all running W98 & W ME.
This new 8600 is XP and the network terminology is really foreign.
Any thoughts.

If the ethernet adapter is not plugged in to anything, then the Network Cable Unplugged message on the Local Network connection is normal and expected.
As for the wireless adpater, you might want to make sure that the Mini PCI card is well seated and all wires are connected. If that doesn't help, try removing the card in Device Manager, rebooting, and reinstalling the drivers for the wireless card.
