slow modem

My modem on my Inspiron 5100 is much slower than my Desktop modem on the same telephone line. In fact on the desktop my connection is 31200 bps and on the much newer laptop it never goes above 26000.
I did get a new modem from Dell and installed it,BCM V.92 56K, with the same result. Now I have been told to reinstall the operating system, is that really the solution? Has anybody had the same problem? and was installing the operating system the solution?

    mimsky,

Thank you for using Dell's Community Forum.

This issue could be caused by a mismatch in protocols between your laptop modem, and the modem pool on your ISP's side. It may also be caused by excessive line noise/interference found on your phone-lines.
If it is line-noise please note the fact that laptop modems (especially win-modems) do not filter out line noise as well as the larger more powerful desktop modems do.

This maybe the case sometimes, but my phone line seems pretty clear, I have used it with other laptops and NEVER had this problem. In fact I have tried this Inspiron on other phonelines and had the same problem.
So my question still is: Will it indeed do anything if I reinstall the operating system? At the Dell helpdesk in Delhi, someone told me this happens to one in 20 laptops... Not a good sign...

Other than making sure you have the best/latest modem driver I really doubt reloading the system software will fix anything.  These software modems are not the best.

You can see that I have had this problem for a while. Now I have decided I should have a new modem on this laptop, my question is; which one or maybe a card?
