USB printer not seen by wireless PC

My notebook PC, (Inspiron 2650), does not see my new USB printer,(Dell all in one printer 922), which is connected to my desktop PC, (Dimention 4300). The notebook uses a Dell wireless adapter, while the Desktop PC is wired directly to the router.(A Dell True Mobile Wireless Router). The network is functional, since I can transfer files to and from each machine. My problem is: I can't print with the notebook PC through the network. (The drivers for the new printer have been loaded into both machines, & there is no problem printing from the desktop PC which is directly connected to the printer)

I have tried to solve the problem by turning off the firewall, (Windows XP Service Pack 2), That did not solve the problem. Another thing I noticed, is that the Icon for the router on the Taskbar, has a yellow "!" or line through it. That does not, however effect internet access, or file transfers over the network.

Is the printer designated as a shared printer on the desktop? Does the printer show up in the Printers folder on the laptop? What software are you running for the router? I ask that only because I don't understand why there is an icon for the router on the taskbar. Most routers do not require any router-specific software to be running.

    Hello Steve
    Thanks for replying.
The printer does not show up on the printers folder on the laptop. (The only printer that shows up there is the old dot-matrix printer that I used to use on the desktop and network). That printer had been physically removed before I installed the new one.
The router software is the software that came with the router. It is a Dell True Mobile Wireless Router. (I had no problem in the past with the old printer - which was connected to the desktop via the parallel port). I could print remotely from the laptop through the wireless connection. When I first installed the router software, it put an icon on the taskbar for the router. It's weird, but that icon never appeared on the desktop taskbar.
When you asked if the printer was designated as a shared printer on the desktop, I don't recall. Maybe that is the problem. I'll check that out tonight. I assume I have to designate it as a shared printer by going into printer properties.
I don't recall having to do that when I first set up the network, about a year ago. The network had no problem detecting my original printer. (Which was connected to the parallel port). The new printer is connected to a USB port on the desktop.

You most definitely need to designate the printer as a shared printer on the computer to which it is connected. Once that is done, any Windows XP computer on the network should pick it up and install the necessary drivers for it. In some cases, Windows XP will not have the native drivers and you will have to install the printer and its drivers.

For a good walkthru on file and printer sharing

Go to support.microsoft.com, click downloads, then Other product downloads.  On this page do a search for File Sharing, then download the walkthru document for File and Printer Sharing

Thanks for all the help. After setting up the printer as a shared printer, and correctly configuring both machines, I am now able to print over the wireless network.
