Wi-fi Switch Problem?

My mom owns an Inspiron (6000, I think) and cannot connect to our wireless network.  The switch that you normally use to turn on/off wireless does not seem to be working.

Anyone know of a way to fix this?  The computer is past warranty so I'd like to try something that doesn't require her to pay a bunch of cash first.

Thanks

    XP, Vista, or 7?

Does the wireless card show up in device manager?

Sorry, it uses Vista Home Premium 32-bit.

The card shows up in device manager and the diagnostics don't detect any problems.

Let's back up a bit.  Why do you think that this is a problem with the switch?  What happens when click "connect to a network" (from the network icon in the systray)?  Lastly, does pressing FN F2 do anything?
