Wireless and wired LAN connection - HELP!

I just purchased two refurbished Inspiron 2200 laptops. Both are having the identical problem attaching to the internet. I'm noticing numerous similar problems with Dell pc's not being able to connect with a simple LAN line. I too am having a problem with a simple connection. I'm curious if anyone from Dell or anyone out there can actually help with this. Dell's Customer Support says they can't and my ISP says they can't. They want me to call their "On Call" service and pay $99 for software support but I refuse!

How is it that I can get connection on both my home desktop and my work laptop without any system changes, but BOTH of these laptops won't connect to the internet?????? I've gone through all of the System Restore, System Diagnostics, etc, etc!!!! Nothing changes. All of my Internet Options settings match those of the laptop I'm using currently to send this message. Nothing makes sense and I really need help! Anyone?!?!?

By what medium do you access the internet at home? Dial-up? DSL/Cable Service?

What operating system is on the 2200's?

It's through a cable modem.... and yes, I've gone through the steps of rebooting the modem, etc. What annoys me is that I've never had to do this with any of my other systems or even laptops of friends who have used the connections.

The OS is Windows XP Home.

Go to the Device Manager in each system and check the hardware lists for any irregularities?(Yellow question or exclamation marks?!)

Try updating the BIOS, chipset and network drivers? Chipset before network drivers.

Are there any third party software firewalls installed on the 2200's?(Norton Internet Security, Zone Alarm, McAfee, etc.) When enabled with Windows firewall, it can create conflicts with internet and network connections.

Is there also a router configured into your home network?

I will give those a try tonight.

There is the basic firewall and anti-virus software installed, and I did deactivate it. Ironic how something that is needed to help protect us can sometimes be a cause of not being able to connect. Sort of contradictory.

I do have a router. Again, it only goes to the two connections I use which are working fine with my desk top and laptop.

With both of the 2200's connected to the router:

Open a Command Prompt(black window)? At cursor type ipconfig/all ? Hit Enter? Copy / Paste the results for each machine into a reply window for this Forum and post back?
