Wireless network setup headaches

Help please.

I just recently upgraded from an dimension running xp to a inspiron 530 running vista.  My XP was hooked up to a belkin wireless "G" router coming from a cable modem.  Once I learned how to amange the router through the ip address it worked great with my tivo box.  I tried transfering all data from old to new pc through the transfer cable, however i made the assumption that my wireless netwrok settings would go with it.  They did not.  I have internet connection to my router but not from router to pc.  I am assuming that I have something wrong in the pc.  I can not figure out how to setup a wireless network on vista to communicate to my router.  I have noticed that my ip address changes when there is a router attached and not attached.  For example ip address would start with 79 if no router, then would go to 169 with router.  Before I started with 192 on the old machine and that machine is still running on the router just fine.  Can someone help me create a wireless network in vista to connect to my router.  I am also running both Windows firewall and Norton.

Thanks
Rob

Does your router have any security features enabled.  For example, is MAC Address Filtering enabled.  If so, then you need to enter the MAC address of the new wireless adapter into the table of allowed MAC addresses on the router.   If the SSID of the router is not being broadcast, then you need to manually set up a Profile in Vista so that Windows can find the router.   If WEP or WPA encryption are enabled, then you need to set up the wireless adapter on the computer with the correct encryption key for your router.

Why do you think you need to clone the MAC address?

Are you connecting to the router by a wired ethernet connection.  It is awfully difficult to administer the router from a wireless connection, since as soon as you make a change, the wireless connection will be lost.

    OK,

I entered in the mac address and it allowed me to connect.  Now I am trying to transfer the router so that it can be managed by the new system and not the old one, however I can not seem to get admin rights.  I tried to type in the new mac address and clone it but it will not let me take over.  Any sugestions?  I also tried to password protect and be able to change settings w/ remote access and that did not work either.

As of present both my xp and vista are vonnected to the router by a wired ethernet.  The wired ethernet to router was originally setup with xp.  I am trying to get xp wireless  (which i believe I can do) and get vista wired to the router as the main control which I can not do.  I was under the impression that I needed to clone the mac address to have admin access.  I am a rookie with this.

Any computer on the local network should be able to administer the router.  If you are trying to set it up so that only computer can log into the router's configuration pages (or if you have it set up that way), then you are making things much much much more complicated than it has to be.   I am not sure what you have enabled because I, unlike you, don't have the manual that came with the router.
