I have a PowerEdge 1500SC server with an internal PowerVault 100T DDS4 tape drive. The server is running Windows NT 4 Server.
A few days ago the tape drive stopped taking tapes. I can see the tape drive exists from Backup Exec but not from Control Panel -> Tape Drives (it was there before I rebooted it a couple of days ago). When I go into Control Panel -> SCSI Adapters, there are two of the following card listed but no devices associated with them.
My gut tells me that I need to upgrade the drivers for the SCSI card but I can't find them anywhere. When I enter my serial number on
http://support.dell.com, I can find drivers but they are all for Windows 2000 or above. When I go to
http://adaptec.com, I can't seem to find the right driver. Am I searching for the wrong thing?
Reboot the system and go into the Adaptec scsi bios to see if it lists the tape drive in there. If it's not in there, it's possibly your tape drive failed.
The tape drive has a lot of moving parts. The SCSI controller doesn't. I'd expect the tape drive to fail before the scsi controller. This doesn't 'have' to be the case, but in general something with moving parts tends to fail faster than something without moving parts.
