Once a month or so our computers are no longer able to print to the 3100CN. They can see the 3100CN through the web interface and can ping it with decent access times, but print jobs just will not get out of the queue and over to the printer. This happens on all computers trying to access the printer. The solution that seems to work is to turn the printer off using the on-off switch on the side, count to ten slowly, and then turn the printer back on. After that everyone can print fine ... for another month until the problem repeats itself.
Has anyone else experienced this? Is there a way to prevent it from occurring?
If it matters the computers accessing the printer mostly use Windows XP Professional, though one computer uses Windows ME. The printer is connected to a wireless G network using a wireless G bridge. The bridge does not seem to have anything to do with the problem as I do not need to touch it to fix the problem -- I just need to turn the printer off and then on. Using the "Reset" option from the printer's menu does not fix the problem -- I have to turn the printer off and then on.
Any help fixing/diagnosing this would be much appreciated!
Yes, I am experiencing the same problem that you describe. In my situation, after the printer has been in powersave mode for several hours (overnight for example) it no longer responds unless I restart the printer. I can still reach it using my web browser but no print jobs will be processed until I cycle the power button. I have spoken to Dell support on the phone 2 times regarding this issue and they have suggested that I disable the powersave by setting it to "0" minutes but that is not allowed by the configuration program. The lowest setting is 1 minute. I have applied all the available firmware updates and the problem has not gone away. This printer is only connected through the ethernet port.
I am quite frustrated by this issue and disappointed with Dell's response so far. We are a large Dell customer and I sold my management on buying this printer instead of HP.
I've posted a message staing that I have the same problem. However, I'm not accessing the printer over the network--it is directly connected to my computer via USB.
I ended up switching my 3100cn from a wireless bridge to a wired connection, and I have not seen this problem occur since I switched to wired. I can only assume that resetting the printer did something to fix the connection between the printer and the bridge. So, if you are printing wirelessly and this is happening, you might try a different bridge.
