Adding HD and keep RAID 0
I have a Dimension 8400 with 2-160GB SATA Hard Drives in an array of RAID 0 with OS on it. I also have the restore disk for it. I would like to add a 160 or 200GB HD IDE or would a SATA be better?, put the OS and the hidden partitions that Dell has on the RAID for the C Drive and keep the RAID 0 as D Drive. What would be the correct procedure to accomplish this? This is my first experience with RAID and I'm not sure what, if anything, I would have change in the BIOS. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks ejn63 for the reply. If I put a SATA in and did a restore from the Dell Restore disk and then did a restore from a backup that I have just done would that work instead of imaging or cloning? If so, what do I have to do so the BIOS would see the new drive as ‘C’ and the original as RAID as ‘D’?
- DO NOT TRY THIS without a backup of the RAID partition.
In order to have another drive work as C, you must DISCONNECT the RAID drives from the system. However, DO NOT ALTER the RAID BIOS information when you do.
To install to a new drive, be sure you are ready with:
The XP CD WITH SP2 on it (anything earlier will blue screen).
The floppy diskette with the SATA drivers on it.
An INTERNAL (NOT USB) floppy diskette drive.
Disconnect the RAID drives, boot the XP CD, press F6 where indicated, insert the floppy, load the SATA driver, install and patch XP fully. Install the Intel Matrix manager and reconnect the other drives.
Note: a RAID 0 array is the single most fragile thing from a system stability/integrity standpoint - again, DO NOT TRY ANYTHING without a backup, or you are playing with fire to an even greater extent than you are in running RAID 0 in the first place. Wow – Looks like I have a job ahead of me – this PC did not come with a floppy drive so I’ll have to install one first then get all the drivers I need before I take on this project! Thanks for the help I really appreciate it and through your help I have a better handle on this, if it wasn’t for the RAID I wouldn’t have had any problem, I’m new to RAID. Thanks again!
