The computer that i am working on will no longer start up ( Pushing the power button & getting a blank screen, but getting power). I ran the Dell Diagnostics and everything came out fine until the hard drive portion. In which i received this:
Error Code 0F00:0244
Msg: Block 6573287: Uncorrectable data error or media is write protected.
I was wondering if anyone might be able to shine some light on this error code for me. I would assume that i have a bad sector, and need a new hard drive, but i need a 2nd opinion.
Did you allow the full "read" test to complete and only receive the one error?
If so, then I would suggest an alternative solution to verify whether the sector is truly bad or not. (It may even get you booting right back up again)
The following link is for an application from Hitachi that will perform a scan on your drive. When it reaches the "uncorrectable" block it will overwrite the sector which will do one of two things. It will either recertify the location and make it good or it will reallocate and mark the location bad. Once this is performed then the full surface "read" test will complete without error, however, Dell diags "Drive Self Tests" will actually report that the drive has failed before and not run.
Once the process is complete then allow Windows to attempt booting and CHKDSK will probably come up and run. Allow it to correct any "soft errors" it encounters and hopefully everything will be back to normal.
