Disc drive ejects continually!

I have a Dell XP 600 .  I have had this disc drive replaced (by Dell) two different times for it not reading discs.  This one is only about 6 months old, it is a Philips DVD+RW DVD 8801. Recently it has started opening and closing continually when the computer is on.  I have now disabled the drive because it was driving me nuts! Any suggestions as to what could be causing this?  In the same time frame I've switched from McAffee to Norton......I disabled automatic back ups and disabled Norton from running but this made no difference.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi, jrock:

This can be caused by a virus or other malware, a badly behaved program or most commonly a loose data cable. Since you mention having had the drive replaced, I suspect #3. If you re-seat the cable and it's still doing this, try starting the computer in safe mode to see if it's still misbehaving.

Thank you for the quick reply.  I will try the cables first and see what happens.  :)
