DVD Fullscreen

I bought an Inspiron 6000 (which is in widescreen) thinking that movies in widescreen format would play fullscreen as opposed to having black bars on the top/side (which occurs when widescreen DVDs play on 4:3 ratio screens).  However, when I play a widescreen-format movie, black bars appear on the top and bottom AND the sides.  As a result, the picture is much smaller that it could/should be.  I don't know how to enlarge it; could someone help?  Thanks.

if using powerdvd you could try right clicking the powerdvd screen when the dvd is running and click aspect ratio>stretch to fit the screen.
