Error Message : Disk Write Error

I repeatedly receive the following error message:

"Disk Write Error. Unable to write to disk in drive C  Files or data may be lost."

Has any one else received this message and got any idea how to fix it?

I have a Dimension 8200 running Windows Me.

I have run diagnostic checks and received no errors with the Hard Disk.  Norton anti-virus has also drawn a blank.
Dell's helpdesk helpful response was to suggest I take my computer apart and disconnect every drive to see if I still get the message.

Every so often this error message page pops up and takes a few return key strokes to clear

I have tried to run scandisk but this has restarted at least twenty times as it cannot write to disk and pops up the same error message.  Norton Utilities Disk doctor also fails to fix the error message.
This problem occurred after upgrading Norton anit-virus 2005 and AOL 9.0
I have found my PC performance affected with AOL lock ups.

I have heard that Windows Me is unstable and wonder if I should upgrade to Windows XP?
Any thoughts on this would be welcome.

Cheers
Graham

The error message means that the hard drive, has failed or failing and should be replaced. You could go to the hard drive maker's site and download their diagnostics to a floppy and use them to check the drive.
Installing a new hard drive would be an excellent time to upgrade to XP.
