hard drive

I have an older (7 years) dimension 4300 whose hard drive just failed.  I do not want to purchase a new computer as this is my sons and I want to buy him a laptop in one years as he will be going to college.  My question is, can I purchase an externat hard drive (ie maxtor or such) and install windows on this to run the computer temporarily.  If not is there any other option for me?

If the failed hard drive is the primary C:/ drive, you cannot replace it with an external hard drive, you would need to use another internal IDE/EIDE HD.
