Hi all. I am a very non-tech savvy computer user (I can add RAM sticks, etc., but know little about the hardware workings of a PC).
I have a Dell Dimension 4100 which won't boot-up properly. From what I've been told by others, the head rack is not positioning itself over the platters properly. Oh well. All I care about at this point is retreiving the data from my HD -- I already have a snazzy new 9100 and don't need the 4100.
My plan is to remove the HD from the 4100 and pop it into an external enclosure (USB 2.0) so I can retrieve the data.
Do I have to do anything special to the 4100 HD to do this? Or is it simply a matter of removing the HD and putting it into the enclosure?
Most enclosures require the drive be set for master, not cable select (which is the way it's jumpered now), so make sure you follow the manual's recommendation and change the jumper setting, if necessary.
