Windows detected a hard disk problem

I received this message:

Windows detected a hard disk problem. Back up your files immediately to prevent information loss, and then contact the computer manufacturer to determine if you need to repair or replace the disk. Disk Name: ST31000528AS

Can anyone offer any help or suggestions?

Thank you,

Shirley

It's always handy to include the computer model and version of windows that's installed, when posting a computer issue.

Run Dell diagnostic's extended test on the hard drive.

Have you made backups of any files and folders you wish to save, to other media, eg, USB external hard drive, or thumb drive?

Do you still have a Dell warranty in effect on the computer?

As there's a warranty in effect, you need to contact Dell's Technical Support ASAP for a replacement hard drive, have your service tag and express service code handy.

Congratulations on making a backup of your files and folder. :emotion-21:

I'm sorry. The computer is a Studio XPS 9100 and I have Windows 7. I ran the diagnostic and the hard drive failed. I did do a backup and my warranty is good for 167 days.

Hi, you can fix the “Windows detected a hard disk problem” by running the chkdsk command. Here is how you can do so:

    • At first, press “Win + R” at the same time to open Run box
    • Then, type cmd >> hit Enter to open Command Prompt.
    • Now, type chkdsk C: /f /r /x & hit the Enter.

Hope this will help you out to deal with such error. All the very best!!!
