DrWatson Postmortem Debugger

Hi,

Last night my Windows XP Home Edition automatically installed Service Pack 2. Now this morning I can't use Windows Explorer, My Computer, Control Panel, or open files on the desktop. When I try to use any of these my computer momentarily freezes up, the screen flickers, and I often get the error message "DrWatson Postmortem Debugger has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." I can still run programs from my desktop or start menu (e.g., double-clicking on Firefox opens up the internet just fine). I can also open many files if I first open up a program (such as MSWord), and use the File-Open menu to navigate to a file and open it (assuming, in this case, the file is a Word file).
I've noticed that it is generally customary to post a HijackThis logfile. I know it is best to first download the most current version of HijackThis, but my computer won't let me. I downloaded the zip file with the most current version and unzipped it, but I can only open files using programs such as MSWord or MSExcel, both of which won't properly open the .exe file for HijackThis. So, my computer already has HijackThis version 1.99 on it, which will run. I know the latest version is HijackThis version 1.99.1, but as I said before, this won't open. So, I'm going to post my logfile from HijackThis 1.99 below and hopefully that will suffice. Thanks in advance!

PS: Believe it or not, the Dell support forum won't let me post my message because it says my message includes the prohibited word "a*s". I figure this must be because of words in my logfile below such as "cla*s". So, I've gone through the logfile and replaced all instances of "a*s" with "WHATEVER". If you need to change it back, I'm sure you can do it using find and replace.

Logfile of HijackThis v1.99.0

    berry053,

You'll get a better response if you post your log in the Virus/Spyware Information and Removal board. That's where the malware removal experts expect to find HijackThis logs.

Thanks for the tip! I'm going to post there too (someone let me know if it isn't okay to post to two forums). I'm reticent to take my posting off of here, though, since I really feel my issue has something to do with Windows XP Service Pack 2, since my computer was working fine last night before SP2, but doesn't work as soon as SP2 got installed.
Also, I figured out a back-door way to open HijackThis version 1.99.1 and generated a log file which is below. Maybe someone will find it useful. I've once again replaced all instances of "a*s" with "WHATEVER". Thanks again!

    desertalamode,

The thread you have posted in was started by another user. Your problem is almost certainly different, and deserves a thread of its own. If you think your system has a virus or spyware, you're in the right board. Without knowing any details about the problem, it's difficult to guess what might be wrong.

In your new message, please describe your system, including the Dell model, operating system it has, and the amount of memory that is installed in it. If the problem began suddenly, please describe any changes (hardware or software) that were made to the system just before the problem began.

Above all, don't reply to someone else's message. Instead, create a "new message", so your problem gets the attention it deserves.

    Jim
