Getting new VMAX - thin provisioning

Hello, we have had old dmx1000s and dmx4s for years - no thin provisioning.  We will be setting up new VMAXs soon.  EMC is pushing us to aggressively use thin pools.  This makes me a little nervous - being over subscribed.  What if several applications at month end or year end all the sudden gobble up all the storage.  Wouln't it be safer for me the customer to just stick with all thick LUNs.  Or can we roll out thin for the less critical stuff and use all thick for the most crucial stuff that we don't want to risk?

You can fully allocate, but that isn't the best practice for a FAST VP system if you are looking into that option.

You could make sure that the LUNs you create for the hosts are never total more than what is available in the array.

There are also alerts you can set if the capacity in the pools is getting low.

we have the same concern, we can't purchase disk fast enough if we run out of capacity. What is our approach ? Thin devices but fully allocated.

we have the similar problem. it takes months for mgmt to decide on the upgrade, month for finance to generate PO & month for EMC to deliver disks. Last time we were almost at 96% when we got our capacity upgraded and there were serious risks to the critical applications.

We have worked with mgmt and brought down our alerts for usage to 65-70%. Once we reach to that level, we give them the headsup

    regards,
