anyone know anything about verclsid.exe?
I am trying to view some pictures that are on my desktop one is a jpeg the other a bitmap. I used to be able to view them with windows picture and fax viewer but now when i doubleclick on the pics the hourglass just keeps going on forever. I went into the task manager and saw that when I went to open the pics a program called verclsid.exe is starting just then. The windows pic and fax viewer starts to open up, but then hour glass just keeps spinning forever unless I end the verclsid.exe through the task manager. But then the endiing the verclsid.exe closes down the pic and fax viewer dumping me back to the desktop. Anyway I searched my computer for this program and it's located in the windows/system32 folder and going to the properties of it says it is Verify Class ID from microsoft.
When I go to open pics anywhere else like my docs or on other hardrives doubleclicking on the pics open up like it should with the windows pic and fax viewer and the verclsid.exe never starts up. So does anyone know why this program is starting up only when I try to open a picture on my desktop and not when I open pics elswhere? I've tried google but not much luck, though it seems possible this is related to a patch from microsoft relating to a vulnerability with the pic and fax viewer. Don't know but when I select the pic on the desktop, right click, and open with windows pic and fax viewer it opens up ok. Telling it to open pic files with the pic and fax viewer doesn't help any.

- Flooby, thanks so much for the response, you gave me some good info there. I just had a problem with that verclsid.exe thing again. I was simply trying to select a target directory for my dvd burning software and was going to set it to copy tot he hardrive instead of the dvd burner and it froze up and wouldn't you know it when I checked processes that darn verclsid.exe showed up. This thing is going to be trouble I can tell as I have already had two instances where it affects my programs by hanging them up. I hopefully can just uninstall that security update from add/remove. Rather than uninstalling a security update, and in light of the fact that Microsoft offers free support assistance for security updates, you might want to consider contacting them and submitting a trouble report. They'll work with you to get the problem resolved in a fashion that doesn't require losing any critical patches.
- Thanks for the links flooby I will check it out. I don't have a good feeling about that particular update right now. I have never had a problem with their security updates in the past so this is new to me. I don't like the idea of not having a security update applied, but if I cna't get this resolved with microsoft help and support I own't have a choice. I think I would be safe even without this one update for now as I am behind a router with software firewall and antivirus plus all the latest spyware proggies, but who knows nowadays. I'll see what I can get out of microsoft support for now.
- Seems a bunch of people are having problems after this security update 908531. I just uninstalled it and things are working again acronis true image was not even able to create or plug an image with this update and now is working again after I removed it, my dvd software works again and windows picture and fax viewer are working too.

Yes. Besides the changes that are listed in the "Vulnerability Details" section of this bulletin, this update includes the following changes in security functionality:
• This security update includes a Defense in Depth change which ensures that prompting occurs consistently in Internet zone drag and drop scenarios."
