Cannot open Links

Cannot open links in OE email messages and/or links in IE.  This problem started after I upgraded from Win98SE to WinXP HE 2SP.  Tried many solutions advised by forum members, also McAfee Tech reps, none which worked.  Have deleted Spyware & Spyware Dr.,  NoAdware 3.0, Live Reg. (Symantec corp), Live Update 1.6.  Have uninstalled McAfee and tried to open links in OE and IE, but none of these worked.
Sure would appreciate if some "Genus" out there among us, or some very nice obliging forum member can help.
I've looked up WinXP help, tried to get into their forum discussions, couldn't connet.  Last ditch effort is to try their "FREE" tech advise @ $99. per solution (Where does the "FREE" come in?).  Anyway, I'm hoping some nice person on this site can help.

Thanks/Richy

Highlander:  Thanks for all your recommends, but nothing works.  Did each one of the recommends very carefully, was hoping for the best, but nope, no links would open.
Tried running mouse over the link, then holding down control button, left click on link (remain holding control button).........nope, nothing worked.
Out of all the "run commands", this one: "regsvr32 mshtml.dll " response read: "This was loaded, but dll registerserver entry point not found.  File could not be registered".

Do not know what this means, maybe it's the file that's causing the problem.

    Please Advise
    Thanks again

    Check these settings

    Open Windows Explorer.
Go to Tools | Folder Options | File Types.

Scroll down to URL:HyperText Transfer Protocol (NOT URL:Internet Shortcut) and select it.

Click Edit or Advanced, depending on your Windows version.

    Select 'open'.
    Click Edit.

"Application used to perform this action" should read:
    "C:\PROGRAM FILES\INTERNET EXPLORER\iexplore.exe" -nohome
(Check the path to iexplore.exe to make sure that is correct and use the double quotes.)

DDE should be checked and in the boxes below it you should have:

    #1:
    "%1",,-1,0,,,,

    #2
    IExplore

    #3 (blank)

    #4
    WWW_OpenURL

URL:HyperText Transfer Protocol with Privacy should be the same.

    "YAHOO".  "Dunedin Did It":

Thank you so very much for providing the correct information to solve the problem of "opening links".  I followed your instructions explicitly in Method 2.  It worked.
I now able to open the links in OE and more so in IE7 which I needed.
