What model computer, what hardware do you have and so on.  Give as much information as possible on the system.  It doesn't automatically mean there is anything wrong, depending on the situation.

Without any information from Device Manager, the only way to really know what device is causing this would be to remove them one at a time and see which one is causing this. 

Just to clarify my last post, when I said that I removed the "Unknown Hardware", I did this in the "Add/Remove Hardware " function in Control Panel. I did not physicallly remove any hardware, as I don't know what hardware is being referred to.

I found a so-called fix in Microsoft's database for the Code 28. They advised to remove the hardware, then run the "Find New Hardware Wizard". I did this, and still came up with the same Code 28. That says to find a driver for the hardware, and install it. In other words, I'm back to square one, which is the yellow question mark on "Unknown Device". By the way, when I removed the "Unknown Hardware", everything continued to run normally, except for my 100MB Iomega internal Zip Drive, but that's another story (I think). The Zip drive problem cropped up weeks after the "Unknown Device" situation.

if you run msinfo, it should tell you what device path that 'unknown' device is on.

msinfo is located at C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\msinfo\MSINFO32.EXE or something like that.  you might have to look through a lot of data, but it will say FAILED or Unknown device.

if you have removed a device improperly or an correctly installed device isn't present, you can get this kind of error too. (like a scanner is not currently attached, for example)

as long as your data is intact and your system does not crash unexpectedly(at least not often :) then there is nothing to worry about.

As mentioned before, all hardware is operating properly, but "Hardware Wizard" insists on telling me that it has found new hardware (which, of course is the "unknown device").

Went into "Systems Information", and am told that "This device has a problem: Code=28 (0x1C). The drivers are not installed correctly.........etc.)

I have no idea what this registry key refers to, and figure out how to find out.

Maybe I'm silly trying to pursue this, but it is annoying, and am wondering if it's one of Microsoft's little games to drive us crazy. In doing a search on Google, I notice that other people have posted this very same problem on other forums, with no solution.

If I was to guess, I'd say one of your system/PCI bus drivers are installed wrong or is using the wrong driver.  it is probable it works fine, but just not optimally.

Is this after a OS install? . . if so, the "Unkown Device" is usually the chipset driver . . you should be able to download that from the dell site
