dial-up connection

Don't know what I've done, but my dial-up window keeps appearing and starts connecting. As soon as I stop it, it starts up again. Anyone got any ideas how to stop this annoying habit?

    Check your "Connections" settings by using IE > Tools > Internet Options > Connections , "Dial whenever a ......." isn't now ticked.
    I have mine set to "Always dial ................".

    You could try using Registry Editor  HKEY
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Network\Persistent Connections
    SaveConnections       set          no               , mine is set to        yes
    --------------
    Or this by creating a New String for HKEY;

    If remote connections are enabled in Windows, the system may try to initiate an Internet connection at Windows startup or at the start of many applications. This setting disables that behaviour.

    Open your registry and find the key below.

    Create a new String value, or modify the existing value called 'EnableRemoteConnect' using the settings below.

    Exit your registry, you may need to restart or log out of Windows for the change to take effect.

    Settings:
    System Key: [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Ole]
    Name: EnableRemoteConnect
    Type: REG_SZ (String Value)
    Value: "Y" = enable automatic connections, "N" = disable

    cheers for the advice, but I think I tinkered with that and it didn't change anything. It just keeps on wanting to dial up. As soon as I cancel it starts up again!!

    CharlesCollins,

    You can try what Gary suggested or under Internet Options>Connections check "never dial a connection" that is what I use.

    Thanks chaps, but the solution I found was to go to Network Connections/Advanced/Dial-up properties and make sure two boxes were ticked. Seems to have worked.

    Those are the two boxes, you are quite right. Also the dial up window is different than before, so you are right on that as well. I didn't try the advice you gave as I am a bit of a novice and it looked complicated. I just stumbled across these two boxes, ticked them and it cured the problem. Thanks again.

    Do you mean the 1st 2 boxes which ? HELP says for;
    ------------------
    "Enable autodial by Location":
    "Lists the available locations where you can enable autodial. Autodial maps and maintains network addresses to connection destinations, which allows the destinations to be automatically dialed when referenced, whether from an application or from a command prompt. To enable autodial for a location, select the check box next to the location. To disable autodial for a connection, clear the check box next to the location.
    The autodial feature works only when the Remote Access Auto Connection Manager service is started. To start the Remote Access Auto Connection Manager service, right-click My Computer, and then click Manage. In the console tree, double-click Services and Applications, and then click Services. In the details pane, right-click Remote Access Auto Connection Manager, and then click Start. In the Status column, Started appears."
    --------------------
    & for  check box;
    "Always ask me before autodialling":

    "Specifies whether to prompt you for permission before autodialing. If this check box is cleared, then you are not prompted and autodial is automatic."
    ---------------
    I have found when a Program requests a Remote Connection you get a "Network Connection POP-UP" not the usual "Dial-up Connection POP-UP".

    So for reference did you also try the HKEY edits I suggested or only tick the first two boxes of "Advanced" > "Dial-up Preferences". ?

    OK.thanks just curios , don't know how that cured the problem.
    If you dis-connect from the Internet then open "Network Connections" & Double Click on your Dial-up ISP Connection , it should show the POP-UP Windows for establishing a Network Connection.
