Dial-up Networking lost on Win XP reinstall
I was having problems with my pc being slow, so decided it was time to do a defrag. Imagine my surprise when the defrag in my machine was no longer working. I did a System restore, but that didn't bring it back and then I lost the ability to do any further restores, or undo the one I had just done.
So I decided (I really wish I hadn't) to reinstall Win XP from the Dell OEM CD that came with my pc. Once the install had completed, the defrag and system resore were back, but my dial-up networking had disappeared! I have tried everything to find it, but it just isn't there. My modem is working fine and I have dialled up using hyperterminal, but cannot get internet access. When I try and add my dial-up settings back through IE, it comes up with Error 711. If I try and set it up through MS Outlook, all my pop3 and stmp settings are still there, but it tells me that dial-up networking is not installed so it cannot activate it.
Is it possible that the reinstall cd was corrupt? I have no other access to Win XP so now I just have a pc that I can't fully use.... any ideas anyone? (I have tried the reinstall once more with no success)

Worked a TREAT! Now I'll set all the downloads up... probably take all night but I am so pleased to be back online again (and not on the laptop). I'll definately keep an eye on this site from now on.

I don't suppose you have any idea why the defrag disappeared in the first place do you?537

When you do a Windows Repair it removes SP1.
I found my settings didn't show when I did a repair but showed OK after I reinstalled SP!.537

To Southernlight:
Thats hard to tell. I assume that you got somekind of error? If so I would check the Event Viewer Which can be found by clicking Start-->Run-->Then type compmgmt.msc-->Click ok-->In the left hand side you will see Event Viewer look under system and application for any errors and post that info here. However those errors will not show now that you have done a reinstall. Next time before you do a reinstall post your problem here I'm sure someone can help. :)

Thats correct if you install SP1 that will also fix the problem, However if you are on Dial-Up you cannot connect to the internet to download SP1. I saw a bunch of people with this problem when I first came to this forum about a year ago and it took me almost a week to find the above solution. I now have a copy of SP1 on CD just in case I ever need it. :)

Sorry , I forgot , I also installed SP1 from Microsoft SP1a CD.

>Click Run Type: regedit
>Click OK
>Select folders in the folllowing order:
>-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
>-SYSTEM
>-Current Control Set
>-Services
>-RasMan
>-PPP
>-EAP
>-when you get to this point, you should see 4 folders (numbered 4, 13, 25, 26)
>-DELETE: folders 25 and 26
>-Reboot
Ohhhh I almost forgot to mention you will need to make sure you visit windows update. You will need to reinstall service pack 1 and all of your critical updates.
