Quite a few times when receiving an email a small window pops up stating: This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an associate in the folder options control panel.
I am a Newbie and do not have a clue what this means. Any help from a kind soul would be greatly appreciated..
Tried to check the message board on this subject with no luck...Help...
Thanks a bunch. Volcano
PS also when trying to use emoticon above it prints out the name instead?
The file came in as pps..which is Powerpoint , does any of windows xp contain the ability to open this email attachment. Thank you so much this problem comes up quite often..
The *.pps file is a PowerPoint presentation. You can view it using the viewer from Microsoft which you can download from
here. If you take a look at the demonstration viewlet I linked to earlier (rather than the text version) it shows the steps to take to create the association.
Try to follow your directions on creating an associate for a file. I am new at this game so bear with me if you have the time. How do you open the files and folder program in Explorer to find .exc and proceed from there, I have spent a good hour trying to figure out to no avail..Help...thank you so much. Volcano
First off, let me "Thank You" for all your past and present help to all of us, you cannot imagine how greateful we are for your enduring patience and kindness!! I downloaded Powerpoint and asked a friend to send a file with pps to see if it works as I still do not have it on my hard drive. Also followed your tutorial viewlet but when I reached expanded list their is no Ratings Folder listed? Could it be under another name for Windows XP? Once again, bless you for all your assistance to the community..volcano
The first entry in the target location is HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE. In order to navigate within that location, click on the plus sign to the left of its name and the contents expand. Find the next entry (SOFTWARE) in the expanded list and click the plus sign to its left to expand it. Proceed through the remaining locations in order until the Ratings folder is reached.
I don't know how you got a Ratings folder reference. That is in a viewlet which has nothing to do with file associations. The viewlet that demonstrates creating/changing a file association is
here.
Sorry about the "Ratings Folder" had jumped to your viewlet on Registry files. I have downloaded Power Point but it is not showing up on my C drive and still cannot open messages ending with pps nor email? Followed your viewlet but only files in explorer exe are windows sp 2 and one uninstall file? Your viewlet set up is different from my computer, I have no download folder showing up on my list when I check programs on c drive?
I have spent most of the evening trying to self teach myself via your viewlets with no success. I opened programs found powerpoint right clicked them went to open with and chose Outlook Express but error window stated powerpoint viewer supports files created in pp 97 or later...Help..what does this mean..Thank you Volcano
The Downloaded exes folder is one that I created on my hard disk. It gives me a single destination for any downloads so that they are all saved in a central location. Since I am on dial-up I need them readily available to reinstall should I need to reinstall Windows.
It doesn't matter where the downloaded ppviewer.exe file ends up. Once it is on your computer, double-click the file and it will install the viewer. Then when you have a *.pps file to view the file should open automatically in the PowerPoint viewer when you double-click it, because the viewer normally establishes that association when it is installed. If it does not, right-click the *.pps file, click "Choose program" on the first dialog, then select PowerPoint Viewer on the second dialog and check the box that tells Windows to always use that application for that file type.
