I did clean reinstall (deleted partitions, created new one, formatted) a few days ago on XPS GEN3. All drivers, begining with latest chipset driver were installed. No conflicts in Device Manager, everything looked O.K.
Installed Acronis True Image Home 11 (the only new program so far - other programs were reinstalled) about 3 days ago - everything is O.K. Installed and played Battlefield 2 (was installed before). Right now started installing Orange Box (compilation of Half Life games) by putting installation disc into the DVD drive, and upon the spinup of the disc - BSOD with following message driver_irql_notless_or_equal and error stop code: 0x000000d1 - screen went blank, tried to go to SAfe Mode, could not - screen went blank during bootup. Next I choose F8 - Last Known Installation which worked - and that one worked - I got into regular Windows. Put Orange Box DVD in again and .... everything is O.K, game is installing as I type, no problems, like nothing happened????
Can anyone help??? I tried to Google the problem, but did not see any specific solutions - many people were having problems with different drivers. Some of them even stated that they did not do anything and the problem just disappeared?!
Thanks a lot for future help, I am completely confused!
It seems that your computer is now working. If this game caused trouble but is now OK, ignore the previous problem. If it continues to cause a blue screen, don't install it or dump it. Search the game web site for support. You are probably not the only victim of this software. My advise is like the guy who went to the doctor and complained, "Doc, it hurts when I do this." "So stop doing that," replied the doc.
Just to clarify the previous explanation of my problem.
When I put Orange Box DVD in DVDROM, the setup did not start yet, the disc start just spining and PC went into BSOD - so, how it could be the game? Install did not start yet?
On the WEB everybody talking about hardware (driver related to one or another hardware componenet) issues, not a software.
Let me see Event Viewer...
Edit - grammar
Edit 2: Event Viewer log:
Event Type: Information Event Source: Save Dump Event Category: None Event ID: 1001 Date: 8/31/2008 Time: 9:07:34 AM User: N/A Computer: (PC name) Description: The computer has rebooted from a bugcheck. The bugcheck was: 0x100000d1 (0x00000000, 0x00000002, 0x00000000, 0x00000000). A dump was saved in: C:\WINDOWS\Minidump\Mini083108-01.dmp.

Computer was not just rebooted - it went into BSOD?
There is no errors before the memory dump, BSOD event, but a lot after, when I tried to restart PC in SAFE MODE and regularly. So Should I post the ones which are after BSOD as well? Bunch of drivers could not be loaded after BSOD untill I used Last Know Configuration which worked.
Now I am back to random BSODs as it was happened before reinstall of OS. To summarize Stop Error Codes, so far I had 3 different: 0x000000D1 with driver_IRQL_notless__or_equal message on top of BSOD page, and 2 generic BSODs with 2 different stop error messages (nothing on top of the page except regular words). The first one was 0x00008086 and second (a few minutes ago) 0x0000008E (0x80000004, 0x804dcf91, 0xaa65abc4, 0x00000000). Rebooting PC now, will look for Event VIewer Errors...
EDIT 01: Just looked in Event VIewer - NO ERROR MESSAGEs???????
Just System Event ID 1001 - Save Dump...
What is next????
Edit 2: Is there any way to analyse .dmp files for any information???
Perhaps you need updated drivers. Another thing you can do is start from safe mode using sequential start mode to see what is bothering your computer. Try updating your bios. Look at your hardware manager to be certain everything is properly installed. (This found in control panel/system.) Open your windows temp file and clean it out.
I would begin by running hardware diagnostics including hard drive and memtest86 on memory... if it all checks out ok, then read this thread carefully starting on about page 6 to the end....your answer may lie there, you have a gen3 with 925 chipset...good luck
