Hi I have a E520, 3gb memory, core-duo E6300, 7950 GTOC graphics card, Windows Vista. The system does not boot up after BIOS and when the green light run arcoss above Microsoft Corporation it freezes. I am able to run safe mode but can not run any other start up option. I did the full memory tests and hardware tests and the computer passed them all.
How can I locate the diver or start-up item that causes the system to freeze? (Sometimes it does not lock up, but very rarely) thanks stuart
try going to MSCONFIG (Start - Run - type msconfig) and disable startup items. you may also want to run system restore (Start - All Programs - Accessories - System Tools - System Restore) and choose the day where you think the system was working fine
You can leave it disabled, this feature for example is used by the Military, they have smart cards that plug into the computer in order to log on and use it. It is a secure way to lock computers from unauthorized use, it also so logs who used what computer when. You will never use it.
I went into "msconfig" and disable the start up items. All items under the "start up" tab work fine. Then I started turning back on items under the "services" tab and found an item that when disabled, the computer starts up fine and does not freeze.
The item that causes the system to lock up is a service item called: "Smart Card removal Policy" by Microsoft Corporation. Why does this cause the system to freeze at start up? And what do I do now?, do I need to repair this service? or leave if off? or remove it?
Hi, well my problem came back, the smart card does not seem to causing the system to freeze. And since it freezes before I can get a logged record or before I can get the event viewer to display the glitch. I have been back to turning off services and start up items.
Now, I found that if I turn off this start-up item(in system configurations):
Under
items: Microsoft,
under
commands: C:\windows\e...
under
location: HKCU\Software\...
the computer restart ok, at least for now.
What is this? I can not get more information from system configurations. Can it be repaired? Thanks Stuart
HI, my problem seems to be very random. Every time it is something different, and this morning when I started the computer up it froze again. Sometimes during restart if I mess with the key board it boots ok, so it is like when the system is distracted it able to boot.
Thanks so much for your feed back through out this process, and I will try a reinstall to see if it a software problem or a hardware issue. Stuart
