Logout hangs
I am having trouble with my computer
Windows XP SP2
Dell Inspiron B130
I installed Comando firewall. I did not like it so I un-installed it. That's when the problems began. It didn't want to un-install fully. Left remnants of MailFrontier, which was never on the computer before. I did a repair using the factory disks. Got everything installed again but now the computer won't shutdown.
I have narrowed it down to this:
Safe mode log out and shutdown work.
Normal mode, log out does NOT work, so computer just hangs there with the background screen and that's it. I have to physically put and hold the power button to shut down the computer.
I first noticed this when trying to restart the computer.
Computer will go into standby and back with no problems.
Computer will go into and out of hibernate, with no problems
Computer will log out and save settings in safe mode only.
Computer will also shutdown and restart in safe mode.
My firewall protection is back to old faithful, Zone Alarm.

and it did NOT work.I have triedThis hotfix from Microsoft but it didn't workI can go online in the safe mode and everything works. I can log out and it will save my settings. I can also restart the computer in the safe mode. I even tried creating an new user profile and it had the same problem/If I log in in the normal mode, everything works great. It's when I go to log out or sgutdown or restart the computer.I do NOT get the message, logging out saving settings, all I get is everything acting like it's shutting down, then I get a blank background, not saving settings, no logging out, no shutdown sound. This is where the problem lies.If I turn on the computer and don't login, I can properly shutdown the computer.305

Did you reinstall all the XP updates/hotfixes after the repair/reinstall?
Are there any error messages in XP Event Viewer at logoff/shutdown? This sounds like a driver issue because it works ok in Safe Mode, when only 'generic' hardware drivers are loaded.

sfc /scannowlike you suggested. I could shut down the computer, It did the shutdown sound, logged out and saved the settings, then restarted.I then went back on and when I was finished, I sut it down and it hang again.I have all the drivers installed from the disk. Nothing is added to the computer. Just like I got it from Dell.I have a backup of drivers that I had from a while back, I'll try those drivers and see what happens.305

installed the drivers that I had backed up to no avail.It sound like a logout problem. If I could fix this, it would be great. If not, I just have to wait until the Holidays are over and then do a clean install. I have some pictures to get off before I do that.Merry Christmas,305

Possible the sound file related to the log-off got corrupt; possibly using another could straighten things out. Don't think the SFC would have picked that up.305

Was very surprised that doing a clean install, I was expecting all the junk programs again. I should have done a clean install some time ago.
