OS Help, Blue Screen, Stop error screen, Technical Information: *** STOP: 0X000000ED Please Help!

Okay, to start things off, I have a Dell Dimension C521. I don't have Vista. For the past 2 days, I keep getting this screen when I log in that looks like this...

"We apologize for the inconvenience, but Windows did not start successfully. A recent hardware or software change might have caused this.

If your computer stopped responding, restarted unexpectedly, or was automatically shut down to protect your files and folders, choose Last Known Good Configuration to revert to the most recent settings that worked.

If a previous startup attempt was interrupted due to a power failure or because the Power or Reset button was pressed, or if you aren't sure what caused the problem, choose Start Windows Normally.

(then it gives these 5 options.)

Safe Mode

Safe Mode with Networking

Safe Mode with Command Prompt

Last Known Good Configuration (your most recent settings that worked)

Start Windows Normally"

I have tried choosing all of those, but it all ends up taking me to a blue screen,

The Blue Screen says on it, all the same thing.

"A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.

UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME

If this is the first time you've seen this Stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:

Check to make sure any new hardware or software is properly installed. If this is a new installation, ask your hardware or software manufacturer for any Windows updates you might need.

If problems continue, disable or remove any newly installed hardware or software. Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing. If you need to use Safe Mode to remove or disable components, restart your computer, press F8 to select Advanced Startup Options, and then select Safe Mode.

Technical information:

*** STOP: 0X000000ED (OX857DA368, 0XC0000006, 0X00000000, 0X00000000)"

Side notes, I haven't recently downloaded anything that would cause this.

I have been closing my computer by pressing the power button a few times, and I think that is the case.

If anyone can please help me, or anyone knows anything helpful about this, please post, I need this computer working as soon as possible, and please list step-by-step. I don't want to do a re installation because I have alot of important files on my computer, and I can't reboot because I've heard that will do nothing to help fix my corrupted operating system. Thanks in advance everyone.

    re: UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME

sounds like hard drive failure, and/or some kind of disk formatting problem

first: run hardware diagnostics: if you have a diagnostic CD (or USB key), boot from it

if you do not have one, go to a good computer, and download the diagnostic software from support.dell.com (e.g., using your Dell Service Tag#)

    ---

if the Dell hard drive diagnostics show that the hard drive is "ok", then you should at least run "quick" hardware diagnostics on all other components

if all hardware is ok, you would want to do a "repair" install. assuming you are running Win XP?

if you need more specifics, please ask.

(most of the detailed steps are in copy/paste templates that the frequently present volunteers can post easily.)

Try the above mentioned steps but before you do a repair reinstall try using windows xp cd.

Press R on the setup screen and press 1 when it asks which windows installation would you like to select and for admin password just press enter .

Type chkdsk /r on the c prompt..

    There is a space b/w chkdsk and / .

Try this incase ur hardrive is good.
