I am trying to open a email attachment and I get the error message" The file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create a association in the folder options control panel." I guess I am more computer illiterate than I thought. I have ni idea what any of this means. I have opened the folder options control panel and then had no idea what to do after I got there. Any help would be great. Thanks
In the control panel at the top click on View>Options>File Types and then select the application from the list that you want the file extension to be opened with. If you're not sure do a www.google.com search and look up the particular extension and see what program it recommends.

Thank you for your reply, however I tried doing what you suggested and I got nowhere. When I hit the view button there is no "options" or "folder types" to choose from. What am I doing wrong? This is a database for genealogy software I am trying to open. Any other suggestions?

Do you own the software that the file was created in? If not, you can't open the file.
If you do own the software, then you need to associate that file type with the software. Post back if that's the case and list the file type (i.e. *.doc, *.jpeg, ...)

If you're clicking on the
View button in Internet Explorer you won't see it but if you go to the Windows control panel you'll see a
Viewbutton at the top. If you click on that one you should see the Options>File Types inside it.
