I recently had to reinstall XP Home Edition on my Dimension 3000 and reinstalled all the drivers supplied with the machine and have encountered the following problems (so far!) that I don't know how to rectify:
Keyboard is now in American format and I need English
Cannot get the correct resolution on the monitor, most likely because the monitor that I have (E173FP) does not seem to be recognised on my computer. My screen in Internet Explorer is too large in particular.
When in Internet Explorer it keeps locking/hanging and unable to close program when Control/Alt/Delete
To change your keyboard layout, see this: Changing Keyboard Layout. Step 2 in the chart gets you to the dialog box for Regional and Language Options. Once you have that box you should be able to locate the drop down menu that allows you to switch from English (US) to other options.
With regard to the drivers, did you follow the recommended order? With a Dimension 3000 you need to install the Desktop System Software and the Intel Chipset Driver first and in that order. Due to resource requirements Dell recommends you follow these with the drivers for the Video, Network Interface (Ethernet port on the back of the computer), and Sound. Drivers in addition to those described may be installed in any order. If you try installing them ahead of the DSS and chipset, however, some of them may not install properly or at all.
Edit: P.S. Don't go past the second step in the tutorial unless you wish to change your actual keyboard to the DVORAK style from the standard QWERTY keyboard. If you are unfamiliar with the terms, following the complete instructions changes which keys type which letters. So unless you want to change the keys around on the keyboard, stick to the drop down menu that lets you select English (UK) and end things with that step.
Thanks so much for this. If I have to reinstall my drivers if I have installed in the wrong order, do I simply uninstall and reinstall them again? :emotion-1:
If you missed installing them in the correct order, you can usually just install them over again in the correct order. I've had some folks tell me that it helps if you do the reinstallation in safe mode, but I've not had reason to find out if that is true.
