problems installing winxp

I am trying to install win xp pro on a dell optiplex gx240 model dhm  p4 256 mb 20 gb with a dell resource reinstallation disk. It goes thru the sequence, detects partion, I formatted, and then it starts copying files. Now the problem. After about 2% it starts not wanting to copy files. They end with .ttf .inf .dll  I tried to hit escape to skip but there are too many of them and then I get a screen that says there is a problem somewhere. I realize this but what??

What's the error message say exactly?  That may help you get better answers.

    sprint777,

You said, "It goes thru the sequence, detects partion, I formatted." Did you delete the partition then recreate it before you formatted?

I have tried that. I have tried quick format, regular format. Like I said everything goes good until about 2-3 % of copying files. I tried using a different dell xp pro disk, same results, I tried using a Dell win 2000 disk, same results. I even changed out the cd rom, thought maybe that was the problem. same results

Are you sure the hard drive is not defective? Try running Dell diagnostics by booting from the blue Resource CD that came with the Optiplex, otherwise download diagnostics using the support links above.

I even swapped out the hard drive. Same results.

Are there any components or peripherals attached that might be interfering with the installation? I'd try removing everything but the bare necessities and see if the installation succeeds then. This link makes some suggestions.
