Recovery Console Freeze-fixing \WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SOFTWARE
I left my PC on last night to awaken to a black screen. Upon reboot I recieved an error with \WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SOFTWARE. I did a search and found
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=307545&sd=RMVP but when I get to the Recovery Console, I press "1" for the C drive and my computer just sits there and there is nothing to press or cancel. I let it sit there for 20 minutes and nothing happened so I just turned it off and tried again. I need to get to the recovery console so I can continue with the steps, but I cannot due to this freeze. Are there any ideas on how to fix this? Thanks

Always include PC model in your posts. ;)
What version of XP is on the hard drive, eg SP2?
Reboot and press F8 before XP starts to load. Select Last Known Good from the menu. If it boots, shut down normally and reboot normally. Back up your files to external media asap, in case this was the first signs of a failing hard drive.
Are you booting from the XP CD to start Recovery Console? Press R at first screen to Launch Recovery Console. When you get to the C,type in:
chkdsk c: /p /r
press Enter
(go take a nap!)
When it's done, remove XP CD and try to reboot from hard drive.If that doesn't work, reboot from XP CD
This time press Enter (not R) at first screen.
XP user license should appear
Accept the license
Select your installation of XP on next screen (should only be 1)
Press R at next screen for Repair/Reintall of XP
Personal files will be ok, but you will have to reinstall all XP updates and hotfixes again.
