Reformatted hard drive

I purchased a Dimension from my employer that had the hard drive cleaned (formatted). I've tried loading Windows 98 and all appears ok during the setup but it want run windows. I can't get it to boot without the system disk installed and it stops in dos mode at A:\. I've tried fdisk and then format C:/s. It takes about 12 hours to format and it's supposed to be a 13 gig hd. Help Please!!

    BenchMonster,

The command you should use is format c: /s (with a space before the "/s." See if that expedites things.

Alternatively, you can boot to a DOS prompt with the emergency boot diskette and type sys c: and to transfer the system files to your hard disk, but in view of the excessive time required to format the hard disk it may be safer to just start over as indicated in the first paragraph.

It might also be worthwhile to check the condition of the hard drive itself. If you can determine the brand, most disk manufacturers have a utility you can download to do this.
