Removing preinstalled software required accessing hidden administrator account

I have 3 week old E1505 w/ Vista that I wanted to clean out a bunch of preinstalled software.  I could not use my user-created administrator account to remove many of them, including Earthlink setup files, Microsoft Works, Dell Launching programs.  All were blocked by saying that "administrator privileges were required.... contact your administrator.." approximately that language.

Combing the internet for solutions, I found that Vista has a hidden administrator account, and it occurred to me that this administrator account would allow removal of the programs.  Meanwhile, Dell email tech support was not helpful.  An article called " How to access the true Administrator account in Windows Vista"

is on a web page from computerworld.com

Follow the instructions exactly, and using the built-in administrator account I was able to uninstall all the preinstalled software I wanted.  In addition, I was able to disable many startup programs that I could not when using my user-created administrator account.

Hope this is useful information for someone.

From where are you trying to uninstall the software...???  Do you go to the Start All programs, select the folder and then click on the uninstall icon there...???

Or do you go to Programs and Features and uninstall them from there...???
I did the first day what you're trying to do... Uninstall all that software, and yes the UAC (the hidden administrator you said) asked me every time to allow or continue the process... and that's something you have to get used to if you do not enable the Administrator.... Other thing, you can disable that UAC but is not really recommended...

But well, it will help to knoe from where you try to uninstall the software...

I was using the control panel to uninstall programs.  But simply turning off UAC would not work, the process was simply blocked, a big red "X" on the screen.

also, some programs would uninstall using my user-created administrator account, and others would not.  For Yahoo Jukebox, it was a funky story.  It never worked.  I could not uninstall it.  Then I reinstalled it from the web site.  Still didn't work.  This time I could uninstall it.

It seems as though only some preinstalled software was installed in such a way that only the "built-in" administrator could remove, but other was installed in such a way that the user-created administrator could remove it.

Not really, you should be able to uninstall every single program with your Administrator account, but every time you may be prompted to continu or allow the process.... It's  kind of weird you are having problems with the uninstallation problems... Try by disabling Startup items on MSCONFIG and then try to uninstall the software, maybe one of the applications you're trying to uninstall is running on the background and is not letting you to uninstall it...

Did you try right clicking on the uninstall utility and choosing Run as Administrator? Programs such as Yahoo, should have an uninstall option in its program folder. If you want to disable the programs from Starting up, use Windows Defender Software Explorer under Tools in the Defender program.

I guess there are doubters that this was a real problem.  Keep in mind this problem was only for PREINSTALLED software.  I was able to install and uninstall software I installed at will using my own administrator account.  The preinstalled software did not have uninstall icons in the start menu, so I had to use the control panel, which has no "run as administrator" option.
When disabling startup programs, when logged in as my user-created administrator account, certain startup programs the disable options were greyed out (not available).  When logging in using the built-in administrator, the disable options became available.
If this hasn't been a problem for anybody else, that's great... it was a pain in the rear.  My new machine was a "scratch and dent" special directly from Dell, maybe they install software slightly differently in that situation.

Well, thanks for sharing the information. Someone else may run into the same thing and this thread may help.

Thanks for that information. I have a new machine coming (with Vista preinstalled) and I'm sure there will be some preinstalled software that I'll want to remove as well.
