How do I safely remove programmes from startup. I do not want to uninstall them, but just remove them from the startup window. I have a Dimension 8400 and am using Windows XP.
Start>Run>msconfig.exe. When the msconfig window opens, click on the Startup tab. From here you can uncheck anything you don't want running at startup. OK your way out. The next time you boot, you will get a message that you are running in "selective startup mode" (or words to that effect). Click on "don't notify me again".
OR
There is an another utility which is much more comprehensive and informative - AutoRuns from Microsoft TechNet. Download and save the file (it's a .zip file), and then unzip it. This results in two files - autoruns.exe and autorunsc.exe (the latter is the command line version of the program). Neither has to be installed - just double click on autoruns.exe. The interface will open and autoruns will scan your system. Once finished, click on the "logon" tab to see what is running at startup. Again from here, you can uncheck anything you don't want running. AutoRuns gives you much more information than msconfig.
