Slow sytem boot up...
I am not quite sure where this post should go so I figured Id put it in general board...Hopefully someone can help...
I have a Dim 8250...Up until about 2 weeks ago the boot time (power up to access to Desktop icons used to be about 35 secs or so) The boot time on my computer has recentlly diminished to about 1 1/2 to 2 mins. It appears based upon watching icons load in the system tray that the culprit is my anti virus software. I am running NIS 2003.
The other icons in my sys tray (sound, external hardware device removal icon) appear quickly...however the NIS security icons are slow to appear (NIS globe and NAV)...Its alomost as if NIS hangs up and then all of the sudden decides to kick in. I have gone thru the process of defrag, checking for viruses, checking for spyware, removing unwanted items from start up menu (msconfig) etc...All with no change. I have done a clean up of the registry to see if maybe that was the culprit ...Nothing..I have even uninstalled and reinstalled the anti-virus software and updated it to all current definitions etc. thinking that might make a difference...Nada! I have gone to the symantec site to see if I could find anything related to my problem but I could not find anything in the way of topics in the knowledgbase relatively close to my problem.
Can someone give me an idea as to how to tune up NIS so that it loads faster or maybe offer another suggestion on where I might look to see what is slowing down my boot time.

- as us said that the u had tried to do the msconfig option .. u also might did disk clean up .defragment .. so u can tweak your system registry so that u'r system boots and shutdowns fastly ... so go to start->run type regedit and it open the registry editor .. in that press F3 and in the find next box type - waittokill then click find next .. so this will say that searching..after that it stops and on the right hand side it gives u somethind .. to open that which is highlighted it slos shows 20000 so reduce to 2000 and hit ok .. once again press F3 .. it finds more thing ..if once again u see 20000 make it 2000 ..keep continuing until it finishes ..after that u can close all windows ..and restart your computer .. this will make your computer to work faster .. i am giving this tips as u r a computer savy ... so u can follow the steps .. if it does not works .. let me know . .
- Thanks for the advice but that tip you mentioned is to speed up the shutting down of the computer, hence the key name "waittokillservice: It has nothing to do with the start up time...Thanks though..:smileyhappy:
