I have a Dell 2400 with XP Home SP1 installed with an 80GB hard drive. System Restore is turned on, set to use the maximum amount of hard drive space, 12%.
About a week ago, I formatted my computer's hard drive and reinstalled everything. Since then, System Restore only archives about 5 days of restore points before deleting them. With such a large amound of hard drive space to use, it should be months before ANY restore points are deleted. Instead, they are all deleted after a few days. Any ideas how to fix this? Hopefully I won't ever need to use System Restore, but I'd like for it to work properly.
I already tried one step. I turned off System Restore and rebooted. After this finished, I scheduled a CheckDisk, turned System Restore back on, rebooted, CheckDisk ran, and System Restore was activated again. It immediately created a Restore Point. Now I'll have to wait 7-8 days before learning if this fixed it.
if you reformatted 7 days ago, and 5 restore points have been created during that time, it sounds like things are working normally.. incidentally, i have seen my computer go for days without creating new restore points..
Yes, but System Restore should not delete ALL the restore points after only a week. It should take a few months before any are deleted, and then only the oldest ones.
Restore Points are automatically created every other day on my computer, or more when major programs are installed, such as Norton AV. After 6-7 days, all restore points are deleted. However, yesterday I turned off and then turned on System Restore, hoping that would somehow cause it to perform properly. Time will tell.
