Temp ?

Windows XP home .

I have found a hidden folder in my explorer tree above "temp internet files " called "Temp" , It is full of programs and files , I was told by someone on another forum that it is safe to delete these files but when I tried some of them would not delete saying they were been used .

Can anyone tell me what they are and should I try to get rid of them ?

Offen malware downloaded ooff the net will hide in that directory. Try this:-
    ----------------
Use these to remove Malware (Spyware and Adware).
    Spybot S&D
    Ad-Aware
    Cwshredder
With all of these download them, install (after unzip if required), download the latest signature/update file, run, delete all that they find.

Failing those solving your problems a post of a hijackthis log for the experts to advise.
    HijackThis From Here
Download, run, scan, save log, then in notepad copy the FULL log by copy and paste to a post in one of these specialist spyware removal forums:-
    http://tomcoyote.org/forums/index.php
    http://forums.spywareinfo.com/index.php
    http://www.net-integration.net/cgi-bin/forum/ikonboard.cgi
    http://boards.cexx.org/index.php
DO NOT FIX ANYTHING WITH HIJACKTHIS WITHOUT EXPERT ADVICE, most of what it finds you need for normal MS Windows tasks.
Do read the sites FAQ before posting, and advise your problem and what steps you have already done to try to cure your problem.

I am in all those sites as ChrisRLG. You might get me, but any of the more problematic ones are handled by the experts. If you get a 'advanced member' like me, we have other ways of asking for advice from the experts, to pass on to you.

You could post your log here in this thread (if in the Virus Information and Removal Board - if not post in that board not in this thread), and I will have a go at giving advice, but if you go to one of the more specalist forums more experts will be able to help.

Without knowing the programs, I would not be able to comment in spacific.

Lots of programs make use of temp areas to download, and it is always possable when given the option in installing a program to choose the location within a temp area to install, bad practice, but users choice.

Given that did not happen, and no malware is present, it should be possable to delete all the files/folders within that area.

I would check that the file(s) that you are tring to delete are not currently active (from task manager - ctrl/alt/del) if so consider stopping that program and then deleteing. But if that is the case then the hijackthis log would NOT have been clear of that program, or something else that sets it running.

Failing that and it being winXP the following 'may' help, but only may:-

    And last one:

Whenever you access the internet, a running record of visited sites are stored in various directories on your computer. Internet browsers store this information so that when you re-visit a site again, the pages will load faster. For instance, a typical internet page will contain a few graphics images that cause you to wait until the page fully loads. While the page is loading, your internet browser is copying information concerning those images to temporary directories on your hard drive. Now if you were to re-visit a sight the next day, you will notice that the pages do not take as long to load. This is definitely a useful feature, but these temporary files can cause problems if they accumulate over a long period of time. Therefore, this technical brief will show you how to perform a basic clean up of these temporary areas of your drive. Guess you asking this

Ever looked at your Temporary Internet files and wondered what they are?   Ever wonder what these cookies that you keep hearing about are good for? Maybe you should Explore the possibilities that you are wasting a lot of hard disk space with unnecessary file storage. Personally I like to clean out my Temporary Internet Files on a regular basis. Not only to keep from building up wasted files to store, but to be sure that I am viewing the most recent version of whatever information I seek.

If you are using Internet Explorer you can delete your Temporary Internet Files any time by choosing Internet Options...and selecting the General tab. In the Temporary Internet files section click the button labeled Delete Files and then OK. This will remove all Temporary Internet files from their folder on your hard drive. Deleting Temporary Internet files does not remove cookies that are set on your machine.

While you have this tab on screen, you may want to take a minute to click the Settings... button and review your temp settings. I recommend setting your browser to check for newer versions of stored pages Every visit to the page to be sure that you are viewing the most recent version. This also shows you the Current physical location of the folder that your Temporary Internet files are stored in and gives you buttons that allow you to View the Files... or Move the Folder that they are stored in. Though you will probably never need to use these options.

For my XP with MSIE6 I do :
Internet Explorer 6.0 now includes the new Delete Cookies button within its Internet Options window and its Delete Files button does a better job of really wiping out the Temporary Internet Files.
    1. Open up the Internet Explorer browser in the manner that you usually do.
    2. You can double click on the Internet Explorer icon that Microsoft adds to your Desktop.
    3. Then you click on the word Tools, which is contained in your top tool bar area.
    4. This will pull down a menu for you to now click on Internet Options.
    5. In the center of the screen, click on the button entitled Delete Files.
    6. Windows will ask if you want Delete all files in the Temporary Internet Files folder.
    7. You can place a check mark next to Delete all offline content to remove locally stored content.
    8. When you are satisfied with your selection, click on the OK button to delete these Temp files.
    9. This action will free up a decent amount of the Temporary Internet files on your system.
    10. Now click on the newly added button entitled Delete Cookies.
    11. Windows will ask if you want Delete all cookies in the Temporary Internet Files folder.
    12. Click on the OK button to have Windows delete all of these Cookie files for you.
    13. Now click on the Clear History button to clear out your recently visited page links.
    14. When Windows asks if you want to Delete your history of visited Web sites, click on Yes.
    15. Notice that there is an adjustment next to Days to keep pages in history:.
    16. Adjust this setting to your personal preference. 5 - 7 days is usually sufficient for History links.
    17. Then click on the Ok button to save your changes and exit the Internet Options Window

Thanks for all the advice guys.

I have managed to delete all but two temp files , which I found werent there in safe mode they are replaced every time I start up.

As for temp int files I have seen that when you delete them they leave the cookies but if you delete the cookies manually then go to your cookies folder then half of the cookies there have been deleted but not all , I like to keep certain cookies because they log me into forums which I am a member of a few , only this forum I have to log onto every time whether I have a cooky or not ?
