These two Processes are driving me CRAZY
Hey all,
I have two processes that launch at bootup and I cannot get them to stop doing so. The two are EM_EXE and msmsgs,exe. EM_EXE is a tray icon for my Logitech mouse (disabled through the MouseWare configuration in Control Panel). Msmsgs.exe is Windows Messenger (NOT messenger service), and is also the executable for MSN Messenger.
I've attempted to stop them from launching using Msconfig, the startup utility in Spybot S&D, and by physically removing their startup entries in the registry. For msmsgs.exe, I've gone through every user on my machine's profile and turned it off in the Windows Messenger preferences. Also in Outlook Express. These things WILL NOT DIE!!!
I'd just get rid of Windows Messenger, but my wife's family all use it, so............ MouseWare runs my mouse.
It's not so much that they're wasting system resources, although WM can be pretty greedy, it's more that I like to keep my resources at their peak and if a program's not necessary, I DON'T want it running Being forced to run a program hits a sore spot and basically ticks me off.
'Nuff with the rean. Anyone have ideas on how to pull the plug on these intrusive and unwanted processes?

As for Windows Messenger there may be one other place to look. Are you running Norton Antivirus? If so, Norton has an option to protect instant messenger programs. I finally got rid of Windows Messenger from loading at startup by unchecking the Norton option to monitor MSN Messenger.

Well, lets see.. Open Windows Messenger. Open the Tools menu, Options, then the Preferences tab. Uncheck 'Run this program when Windows starts". OK your way out. That *should* prevent WM from starting at boot.
WM also starts whenever Outlook Express is started. That behavior can be stopped with the fix from Doug Knox here.679

Thanks for the responses. Volcano11, tried that, no difference. Ddeerrff, those were the first steps I took. AAAAAARRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGHHH!!! Gremlins?
Tomorrow morning I'm going to write to Logitech and see if they can help me with the MouseWare tray icon. Oddly enough, the tray icon does NOT display, but the .exe shows running in Task Manager.
As far as WM goes, I think Uncle Bill did that intentionally. You installed it, by gosh, you're gonna RUN it. Paranoia? Maybe...............or maybe not.
Gotta keep a sense of humor.

heres exacty what to do- click start, click run, type in msconfig, then uncheck those processes. they wont load up any more, and another good idea is to go to add/remove programs and then go to windows components and then uninstalling msn stuff. it will take the msn messenger totally off, but be sure u dont use any of MSN stuff such as the MSN internet and MSN messenger and MSN stuff- i removed it off mine cuz i dont use any of it and its always annoying, i had the same problem

hodrap, I've done the msconfig thing without success. I need WM because my wife and her family all use it.
Deerrff, I'll try that fix and let you know.
