It normally is not really necessary to make any conversions.

DVD authoring programs will accept many file types as source files but convert during the output (rendering) phase into DVD compliant files.

There are some reasons to convert such as the low quality VCD mpeg to mpeg2 by retaining the 352 X 240 picture on a 720 X 480 black mask. Again this is only needed if the authoring software won't do it.

Thanks for the reply, maybe i should have stated ealier that i have some old movies from vhs i have put onto my pc and the picture is old and i want to in=mprove the quality of picture and sound to dvd quality. Can anyone recomend good software that can perform these operations??

Hello- Virtualdub has filters to enhance video as do many video encoders. Be aware that no software is going to make perfect video out of poor quality files. The best way to improve quality of analog video is to use a Time Base Corrector/Video Enhancer as you capture. Of course you will have to purchase a device like this, the most reasonably priced model that actually works is the AVT-8710. There are cheaper video enhancers, you get what you pay for.
