What does ~ mean?

Hi. I am apologizing beforehand if I am in the wrong forum. I have a problem that is driving me crazy. I have a new file(C:DOCUME~1\NADINE~1\LOCALS~1\TEMP\) which I cannot find. I have searched my HD for three hours and cannot find the file. Can anyone pleassse assist me with this dilemma. Any assistance will be appreciated.
Thank you. annrice44

The character is called "tilde". Used in conjunction with a file, it may indicate the file is in use. In your case, it appears to be abbreviating the full path of a TEMP folder. Might there be a file in that TEMP folder that is in use by a program?

In your case, the use of the ~ is truncating, or shortening the filenames for its own purpose.  C:\Documen~  would be the same as C:\Documents

I think you can determine from this what the proper filename from this.

more to the point, it's being used to make the names dos (8.3) compatabile ...  which kind of begs the question of where are you seeing listings like that?

    annrice44,

The location C:\DOCUME~1\NADINE~1\LOCALS~1\TEMP\ (which you must be seeing at a command prompt) is actually C:\Documents and Settings\Nadine...\Local Settings\Temp. The Local Settings folder is a hidden folder, so if you wish to see the Temp folder and its contents open Windows Explorer and go to Tools|Folder Options|View tab and check "Show hidden files and folders." You will then be able to access the Temp file in Windows Explorer.
